Exploring Maryland, One Trail and One Pint at a Time

There’s something special about the outdoors in Maryland, especially in the fall. Along its scenic trails—whether it’s the sun filtering through the trees at Seneca Creek State Park, captivating views of the Susquehanna River, or the serene beaches and marshlands of North Point Park. For the outdoor enthusiasts that are a part of the Hiking for Brews group, these trails are only the beginning. This community of hikers pairs their love for the outdoors with a passion for local craft beer, visiting some of Maryland’s best breweries (and occasionally coffee shops) after each trek.

Hiking for Brews is more than just a hiking group—it's a welcoming and inclusive space for people to enjoy the outdoors at their own pace. Nicole Meyers, a well-known figure in Maryland’s craft brewing scene, is not only an enthusiastic hiker but also a proud corgi mom, gardener, wife, and coffee lover. Her witty personality and commitment to inclusivity have helped shape the group into what it is today.

"When I (re)started this group, I wanted to focus on giving people a space to join in on hikes with the comfort of being able to move in a way that felt right for them," Nicole shares on the groups official Facebook page. "That often meant shorter and slower-paced hikes than you might see with other 'adventure' groups. Over the past few years, we have continued to adapt, to give those folks the same space that brought them to the group, but to also challenge those who felt like they were looking for something to stretch their goals. You’ll see a variety of hikes catering to both on our Meetup page."

The group’s desire to cater to hikers of every skill level is evident in their choice of trails and the supportive atmosphere they foster. Whether you’re strolling along the paved paths of the BWI Trail or tackling the terrain of the Jones Falls Trail, Hiking for Brews offers options for every skill level. And while the trails provide a sense of accomplishment and connection to nature, the post-hike gatherings are where friendships are born.

Local breweries like Heavy Seas Beer, Checkerspot Brewing, Sapwood Cellars, Crooked Crab, Black Flag Social House and Double Groove Brewing Company have been just a few of their stops, providing the perfect setting to relax, refuel, and celebrate the days accomplishments. Occasionally, the “brews” take on a different flavor with visits to Maryland’s beloved coffee spots, offering a caffeine boost for the early morning hikers.

The group has hiked some of Maryland’s most iconic trails, including:

  • Seneca Creek State Park

  • North Point State Park

  • Susquehanna State Park

  • Marshy Point Nature Center

  • BWI Trail

  • Jones Falls Trail

  • Patterson Park

  • Harpers Ferry

  • Rocks State Park

  • Calvert Cliffs

For Nicole and the Hiking for Brews community, the joy is in the journey and the friends that are made, whether that’s through shared laughs on a trail or toasts at the brewery. It’s a group where all are welcome, and every step, no matter the pace, is worth celebrating.

Lace up your hiking boots, grab your growler, and join Hiking for Brews on their next adventure. After all, Maryland’s Outdoors are calling—and there’s a cold pint waiting for you at the end.
